Jobs with Justice Stands Up Where Our Worker Rights Are Most Vulnerable
By Mary Ann Schroeder, UFCW Local 81 member and JwJ Treasurer

Last summer, when George Bush threatened to send troops to Tacoma and Seattle ports to replace Longshore union dockworkers, we were there to stop it. And when Seatac employers used the INS to arrest low wage airport service workers organizing unions, we were there to prevent future raids. And when the Bellingham City Council hesitated to pass our state's first municipal Living Wage Ordinance, we were there to help pass it. More than 3000 activists in our state have taken the "I'll be there" pledge and we form the heart of Jobs with Justice.

Success in our worker's rights struggles must be part of a larger campaign for social and economic justice. To that end, JwJ is a coalition of local labor, community, youth, and faith-based organizations dedicated to workplace and community justice campaigns. An activist approach is also at the heart of JwJ. While policy, research, and lobbying efforts are critical to justice movements, JwJ's unique role is to mobilize members of our coalition to take creative confrontational actions. With our broad base of organizations and activists, we can really turn out a crowd! Last summer, we helped turn out thousands to support Longshore union members. And most recently, JwJ is working with the Justice for Janitors campaign of SEIU 6 to turn out activists to support the right to healthcare and living wages.

We thank your organization for supporting JwJ and holding a seat on our Steering Committee with over 110 other local organizations. JwJ is a democratically run organization. While we will continue to address a vast range of worker rights struggles, our Steering Committee votes on priorities each year that serve to focus where we can play a unique role. This year we committed to three broad programs: Worker Organizing Impacted by War; Immigrant Worker Rights; and Global Justice. Given the bold corporate attack on worker rights, the steering committee sought to place JwJ where the battles are ripening. This attack has directed its greatest energy on immigrant workers and workplaces in which "national security" is used as an excuse to erode rights. Our victories on these frontlines will send a clear signal that our entire worker rights movement can win even where the corporate attack judges us most vulnerable.
