Honoree Dinner 2003 2002 2001
2001
In October of 2001, Jobs with Justice held is first annual dinner honoring some of those who have stood out in the fight for social justice. We honored local heroes committed to our goals
of global justice, criminal justice reform, and workers' rights.
The honorees from 2001 were:
- Ron Judd
- Harriett Walden and Mothers for Police Accountability
- The Newspaper Strikers
Ron Judd, Western Regional Director for the AFL-CIO, was honored for his work navigating among labor, environmental, social justice, and faith groups to help shut down the WTO during its meeting in Seattle.
Reverend Harriett Walden and Mothers For Police Accountability for their long struggle to promote a civilian review board, call attention to racial profiling in King County, and fight for criminal justice reform at every level.
Reverend Walden co-founded Mothers for Police Accountability (MFPA) in 1990. MFPA continues
to organize in coalition with others to support changing police policies which result in
police violence and misconduct.
The Newspaper Strikers - Over 1000 members of The Newspaper Guild-Communications Workers of America 37082, Operating Engineers Local 286, Teamsters Local 174 and Graphic Communications International Union 767M who stood their ground against the monolith and walked the line for the rights of workers. In November of 2000, workers at the Seattle PI and Times escalated their commitment to jobs with justice and began a strike to improve living standards for all workers in Western Washington and against a scheme to weaken union power. In the end, we were victorious, roundly defeating numerous union-busting attempts against worker solidarity and divisive union contract standards.
